Tony strikes a hit with Tom McGuiness
BHR1287's Tony Stratton was up at dawn and down to the studio on Monday 13th May as he had an important telephone interview with a one time band member of the incredible 60s group Manfred Mann's Tom McGuiness.
Tony spoke with Tom about his musical career that spanned more than 50 years that started following a stint in the short lived Roosters with Eric Clapton. McGuiness then joined the 1960s group Manfred Mann as a bassist, performing in a line up with Paul Jones. The band then sought to transform itself from jazz into a rhythm & blues group. When Mike Vickers and then Paul Jones left the band Tom started to take the role of guitarist. Tom's National Steel guitar became an important part of the group's
sound and featured on hits such as "Pretty Flamingo".
After Manfred Mann disbanded in 1969 he formed McGuinness Flint with Hughie Flint, they disbanded in 1975. He later went onto join Paul Jones and Gary Fletcher in The Blues Band . Tom also spoke about how their song "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" was kept from the No 1 spot by Ken Dodd's track "Tears"
A historical moment for Tony Stratton and for listeners of BHR1287, one for the archives.
